The 2013 National Elite Circuit Series – Stockton-On-Tees 05th July
George Atkins 100%ME won a convincing victory in round 2 of the National Elite Circuit Series in Stockton-On-Tees last night. Lapping many riders in the later stages of the race, Atkins set his stall out from the gun. Running in the front group behind leaders Ed Clancy Rapha Condor JLT and Graham Briggs Team Raleigh early on, the cyclists had soon split into four groups. Further back the main peleton had formed and several smaller pockets of riders began to drop back.
A very different feel to the course from last year when it rained vertically for the entire race. It was a warm summers evening with hardly any breeze, so taking on plenty of fluid for the duration of a fast race played an important factor.
Several attempts were made to bridge the gap, but a technical course with cobbles thrown in proved difficult for second place man Ed Clancy. Talking to the TV crew after the race, he said that he enjoyed the evenings racing, but it was hard, and he was glad it was over. He explained, it was a series of hard acceleration every lap, and on the night his legs didn’t have the power that he can produce on a straighter course.
Atkins took up the lead in the later stages of the race to win by over a minuet. Celebrating across the line amongst the back markers, he said “it was a show of joy at ending a long spell without a result”. Clancy sprinted into second ahead of Graham Briggs with Jack Pullar Madison Genesis fourth.
Harry Tanfield Herbalife – Leisure Lakes Bikes took the prize for quickest local place rider.
Tobyn Horton Team UK Youth took the prize for the sprint points on the night.
