OVO Energy Tour Series | 2018
Team Breeze & Canyon-Eisberg were crowned the 2018 OVO Energy Tour Series Champions as the Tour celebrated it’s 100th edition in Salisbury. The Tour Series began with the first race in Milton Keynes on 21st May 2009 when Graham Briggs, CandiTV-Marshalls Pasta took the individual win, with Team Halfords Bikehut winning the First Series. The Tour has grown from strength to strength over the past decade and introduced this year, a full Women’s Program to match & compliment the Men’s format.
Team Breeze set about their campaign early on with back-to-back wins in Redditch & Motherwell with Megan Barker taking individual wins, soloing to a 30s+ victory in round two in Motherwell. Team Breeze took the Team Points in three of the rounds & held their lead throughout with NJC-Biemme-Echelon a close second. Nobody was able to match NJC-Biemme-Echelon’s Nikki Juniper in the Eisberg Sprints Competition winning individual glory in the Aberdeen & Durham rounds and the final in Salisbury.
Defending Champions Storey Racing came third in the end winning the final Team Points tally in Salisbury but were unable to move any higher up the Points Classification. They all so topped the Points in the Aberdeen round. EJay Harris provided their only individual win in the penultimate round in Wembley.
Team OnForm started off in round one with Anna Henderson claiming the Eisberg Leaders Jersey before taking back-to-back victories in the Aberystwyth & Stevenage rounds. A mechanical in Durham in the final three laps put pay to a possible triple victory as herself & Nikki Juniper dominated the race in a first visit for the Women to the iconic Round on the Cobbled Climb of South Street. Durham has hosted the most rounds in the Tour Series to-date.
Anna Henderson said after win in Stevenage: “This year two wins in a row is absolute confidence – & for the whole Team to be here tonight makes it even more special.” Speaking about finishing second in Durham after a bike change with three laps remaining. “A mechanical is bike racing isn’t it? I was reeling & had a bit between my teeth on Sunday, and then the confidence coming in today, and being able to trust myself.” Moving onto the Penultimate Round in Wimbledon tomorrow: “Now it’s just a case of recovery. Warm down, have a massage & see how we go tomorrow”.
Consistent riding from newly formed YRDP having missed a round completely whilst racing abroad came 5th out of the remaining teams.
Rene Said after the Tour Finished: “The Tour Series concluded yesterday with an amazingly fast race last night in the beautiful town of #Salisbury
The team concluded with another 4th place on the night, giving us 5th overall at the end of 8 rounds of racing. To put that into perspective, we were the only new team to race in this year’s series, on top of that we are one of the youngest teams (we average 10 years younger than the 2nd and 3rd team in the standings).During the past 4 weeks we’ve had ups and downs as a team, but most importantly we have become a team.
Rene went on to say: “A big thank you to all riders, parents and staff taking time off from studying and work.
Finally a big thanks to all our team partners; Jakroo Custom Apparel for our amazing Aero LS Skinsuit that made it easy to spot us on the course and on TV, KTM Bike Industries UK for providing us with our amazingly fast Revelators, Sponser for keeping us hydrated and giving us an energy boost when needed, EKOÏ/EKOÏ UK for our brilliant AR13 helmets (none of which were tested luckily) and the our custom Perso evo4 glasses, Saddleback Fred Whitton Challenge for enabling us to ride this year and finally to Chris Maher from Cycling Shorts.cc for all the great pictures.”
