Curlew Cup 01 July 2012 – Northumberland

The National Women’s Road Race Series is run over 6 rounds this year. The later two rounds over two events. The Curlew Cup is run in conjunction with the Premier Calendar Beaumont Trophy around a circuit totalling 55 miles, starting and finishing in Stamfordham, Northumberland. The race is part of a weekend long event, the Virgin Money Cyclone comprising a leisure ride, an elite criterium, a cycling challenge and the elite men’s and women’s road races.

Race

The race set of with 36 riders, and the first split came in lap three with five riders going clear. Series leader Sarah Storey along with Catherine Williamson, Helen Wyman, Eileen Rowe and Rebecca Heath all rode to the end in front, with two smaller groups forming a minute or two behind. Blustery and rainy conditions hampered the girls around the course that at one point might of been cancelled, due to flooding from a deluge earlier on in the week.

On the final run into Stamfordham, Sarah Storey broke free and won the sprint by a couple of bike lengths to make it a third victory in the series and well clear of her nearest rivals.
