Thrills and Spills

2011 is set to be a thrilling year of Moto GP action. Honda’s new recruit, the 2007 Champion Casey Stoner, appears to have the raw pace advantage at the moment. However, a controversial collision with the legendary Valentino Rossi in Jerez has limited him to third place in the championship behind his team-mate Dani Pedrosa and Yamaha’s reigning World Champion Jorge Lorenzo. On top of this, Britain’s own Cal Crutchlow will be contesting this year’s championship for the Monster Yamaha Tech3 team. Crutchlow is a former British Superbike race winner and has made a solid impression at the start of his Moto GP tenure, currently lying 9th in the championship. He will be hoping to move things up a gear at his home event. Other British stars out to impress are the Moto2 category hopefuls Bradley Smith, Scott Redding and Kev Coghlan.

On the right track

British racing fans will have another reason to feel proud this year, as improvements made to the facilities at the Northamptonshire venue have been met with universal acclaim. Even the F1 fraternity appear to be impressed, with Red Bull’s Christian Horner commenting: “It puts Silverstone right up with the best in the world. It’s quite staggering, the scale of what’s been built here.” The new £27 million pit and paddock complex is now situated on the opposite side of the track to the old facilities, which means that the start-finish straight is now located along Hangar straight. After years of criticism, Silverstone can finally hold its head up high and compare itself with the best the Middle East and Asia has to offer. It’s an event not to be missed.
