Newly Crowned National Champion Jessica Roberts Sails Arms Aloft Across the Line to Victory Along the Riverside Road Finish in Stockton-on-Tees

Jess Roberts [Team Breeze] sprints to victory in the inaugural women’s Stockton Grand Prix donning the newly won Red & Blue strips of the HSBC-UK BC National Champion.

Roberts Said Afterwards “I didn’t feel great at the start – but I rode into it. It was a good race”. “We just rode as a group in the race & I was the one feeling the best. So, we just collectively agreed with that”.

“We were always in the moves and always had some there so I felt like we had control of the race. We were communicating well & always talking to each other”.

“The lead out at the end just went perfectly for us. Yeah, it was a real team effort – I couldn’t have done it without them”.

A race that normally lends itself to a bunch sprint for the men and the National Championships that were held in Stockton 2 years ago proved no different for the women this year.

An early start on the Riverside saw 55 riders tackle the 113km undulating course with the traditional Riverside circuit finish that passes the finish line 4 times.

A wearing down process in the heat on the day saw a handful of breaks form without gaining much momentum. With Breeze driving the train along, Callander & Panchaud [Dama Bianchi] had their go before a larger 10 ride group formed including series leader Sophie Wright [Torelli-Brother], National Champion Jess Roberts, winner of the National Circuit Champs Anna Henderson [Cycle Team OnForm] and Rhona Callander. Storey Racing spent a lot of time marshalling the moves with Ejay Harris collecting the most aggressive award.

Returning for the final Riverside circuits the group stuck together to fight-it-out in the final kilometre.
Running down from the top hairpin bend proved no problem to Roberts who has delivered a number of victories already this year, showed a clean set of wheels ahead of team-mate Megan Barker and third place rider Anna Henderson.

HSBC-UK Grand Prix Series 2018 | Stockton GP – A win by a whisker for Matt Gibson

Gibson’s lunge across the line on the Riverside Road sealed a doubly successful weekend for JLT Condor winning both the National Circuit Championship on Friday evening and the reduced length Grand Prix on Sunday.

It was a close call over the line with a photo-finish to confirm Gibson’s win over Matt Walls [100%ME]. A race with-in a race meant loads of action from the gun, before two incidents left the race without medical cover. The race was halted until normal play could resume where JTL Condor & 100%ME tussled off the front without any significant gap lasting long. With the OVO Energy Tour of Britain wild-card selection on the minds of the Domestic teams throughout the day, pressure was applied all the way back to finishing circuit with around 2/3rds of the original 147 riders making the cut.

Further digs off the front in the closing laps were neutralized as around 40 riders contested the final kilometre. Emils Liepins [ONE Pro Cycling] took the 3rd place on the podium with Daniel Tulett [100%ME] & Chris Latham [ONE Pro] 4th & 5th. 100%ME took the team award on the day finishing with 4 top 10 riders. Series Leader & newly crowned national champion Connor Swift finish 14th to retain the HSBC-UK Series Leaders Jersey going into the next round with Gibson 6 points behind. Jack Pullar [Canyon Eisberg] sits 4th with Dan Tulett 5th.
