Pidcock Strikes Gold for Team Wiggins in the second edition of the East Cleveland Klondike GP
Tom Pidcock strikes Gold along Westgate in Guisborough for Team Wiggins in the second round of the HSBC-UK BC Spring Cup Series, the East Cleveland Klondike Grand Prix, the second successive win for the team since the inaugural race in 2017 when Chris Latham took the honours.
A young Pidcock showed his world class talent ahead of team selection for his debut in this week’s forth edition of the Tour De Yorkshire – riding for Team GB.
Riding into Guisborough in the final kilometre, Pidcock had Matt Holmes, JTL-Condor for company having shed Jonny McEvoy Madison-Genesis as the three men escaped on the final small circuit. Holmes set off his sprit with a hundred meters to the finish line, but the 18 year old Yorkshire Man had the legs to finish the job off.
A long established three-man break formed early on after several Kermises on the out lap. Team Wiggin’s were represented along with Erick Rowsell and Conor Swift, both Madison-Genesis. The long break of the day lasted till around twenty kilometres remaining gaining around four minutes at one point, Rowsell picking up the KOM prize in Saltburn-by-the-Sea for his hard days effort in the saddle.
As ONE Pro Cycling and JLT Condor piled on the pressure in the closing stages, the three leaders were eventually brought back into the fold before a counter-attack from a dozen or so riders including Series Leader Karol Domagalski, ONE Pro Cycling and strong man Steve Lampier, riding for Saint Piran this season.
McEvoy’s third place takes him four points in front of Domagalski and into the Leaders Jersey ahead of round three the Chestnut Homes Lincoln Grand Prix on Sunday 13th May.
