Revolution Season 7

The Season Finale of the Revolution (28) was a tail of two halves. Bringing together the National Madison Championships (New Champions Luke Rowe & Mark Christian) & the Revolution. This allowed a full days racing at Manchester’s Velodrome. Sprinting was the theme for the last Revolution, with top British Men & Women competing against World Class rivals. With the World Championships only weeks away in Denmark & little seen of both Chris Hoy & Victoria Pendleton how would they fair! A host of German sprinters were invited along with Dutch Cycling Supremo Willy Kanis to keep VP on her toes. Chris Hoy soon established his dominance & put in the only sub 10 second qualifier (9.995). Pendleton went all the way to the final against Kanis. (in my eyes untouchable!). As for the Revolution Championships. Owain Doull lead the DHL future boys all the way. Emily Kay took the top slot for the DHL future girls (round 2) & Team Slicks (Captained by Craig MacLean) emerged victorious! The new format still has capacity crowds. All in all, another great season. Roll on Season 8!
The Revolution (27) got underway with DHL Sprint School Keirin finals. The selection was challenged earlier in the day & won by Luke Boulton. This edition of the series was about the Juniors & DHL Future Stars, with the regular Championship racers & invited younger sprinters from the continent. Both germans, Stephan Boetticher & Christina Konsulke were a force to be reckoned with. DHL leaders Owain Doull & Emily Kay increased their lead. While Team Sky’s Geraint Thomas added staying power to the Rollers. Team Slicks retain their leading position with 28 points.
The star of Revolution (26), was no doubt Bradley Wiggins. Returning to the boards for the first time in over a year, Bradley rode around the track, much to the delight of the crowd.
Bradley, who switched his concentration to the road, with a fantastic 4th place in the 2009 TDF (Tour De France) showed his Track Cycling pedigree with ease!
Photo’s by Chris Maher, for Track Cycling. Author Guy - Swarbrick.
This was one of Bradley’s last public appearances in his Team Garmin colours of 2 years. After several rumours since the launch of a British Pro Team, Sky Pro Cycling finally revealed their jewel in the crown. (Read)
New DHL Future Star Girls leader Emily Kay (Team Dynamo) received her jersey several days after the event. When the judges counted back the position of the riders for the girls competition. It was deemed that Emily had better placements than Hannah Barnes, although they are on equal points.
Season 7 of the winter Track Cycling Revolution Series, sees a new format, for the spectators & competitors alike. The new concept is designed to help develop, up & coming Future Stars of the track. 8 Teams, captained by elite cyclists, combining both sprinters & endurance riders, with the youngsters riding along side, & gaining experience from, the very best in British Track Cycling.
Once again, Manchester Velodrome hosts a sell out session of the Revolution (25). Rob Hayles Team Forza take the top slot of the leader board, with 10 points, closely followed by Slicks, then Pacers. DHL Future Stars Girl Hannah Barnes wins 3 races, that helps their team to the victory after round 1 (of 4).

Author: Chris Maher, Pictures courtesy of: Chris Maher | Photography
The Third Round in Season 8 of the Revolution Series switched back to the Elite Sprinters, but another strong field of Endurance riders proved a popular mix at Revolution 31.
Prior to the Revolution starting at the Velodrome had been a day of competition, for the Sprint School. The DHL Sprint School is a feeder of talent, for Juniors coming into Racing. This gave an opportunity for the School to showcase, And the Finals were ran just prior to the Revolution.
Getting the Revolution underway was the Elite Team Elimination. The 3 men teams batted over the course with whoever pasted the chosen lap last, being eliminated, along with fellow team members. The winning combination of Captain Franco Marvulli, Andrew Fenn & Jon Mould brought the first top result for Le Col, who as the night drew on, proved difficult to beat.

The Australian Pursuit was billed as one of the highlights of the evening. This being the first time this style of race had been used at a Revolution. The idea was one team member from each of the eight teams, are placed at equal distances, from the nearest competitor around the 250m track. Starting the race over a 12 lap distance, each competitor would continue to the end or until being caught by the person behind. If caught, then the rider would be removed from the track till only two were left complete the distance. First out was Claudio Imhof from MCC followed by Eric Rowsell from Revolution All-Stars… Bearing in mind that the actual finish line was the starting point for each competitor, this would make the last couple of laps a little difficult to determine. But is soon became a two horse race between Leif Lampater & Dean Downing. The crowd got behind the two hopefuls & this provided good entertainment for everyone alike. It was Maxgear Racing’s Leif Lampater that won the race, Dean Downing (Rapha Condor Sharp) second & Kit Karzan (Motorpoint Marshalls Pasta)third.

In a build up to the GB Vs Holland finale, it was a chance for the Sprinters to get back on the track. 8 laps in total with 5 behind the Derny saw Holland’s Van Den Berg go for a long one. But it was countryman Teun Mulder that took the win with Ross Edgar second & David Daniell third.

Revolution 30 Round 2, 20th Nov 2010
Author: Chris Maher, Pictures courtesy of: Chris Maher | Photography
The Second Round in Season 8 of the Revolution Series switched focus to the Endurance athletes. With the added flavour of Continental Guests, this round was fast & furious, and crammed full of current & ex World Champions… Taking on the might of these World Champions are current Championship leaders Team Sky, who clocked maximum points in round one with the help of Chris Hoy. Bolstering up the Team this time round though, has brought, Sky Pro Cycling’s endurance men back to the Track, lead by Geraint Thomas, with Ben Swift & Pete Kennaugh.
Event 1: Racing got underway with the Elite Riders Devil Scratch Race. 24 riders all trying to evade elimination from the gun brought the first surprise of the night. 4 times World Champion Franco Marvulli, Captain of Le Col for the evening, was the first to leave the track. This was followed by Luke Rowe, then Alex Rassmussen, Michael Morkov & Andreas Muller. One by one the field was reduced until only 10 riders were left to race to the finish line. Touching wheels half way through the race brought Team Sky’s Pete Kennaugh crashing into the apron. Missing a lap or two, he soon rejoined & aided team mate Ben Swift to the first victory of the night.

Event 7: DHL Future Boys 6 Lap Dash
Once again, CHEP UK’s Harry Enfield & Team Sky’s Sam Lowe battle for the top position in a close finish. This time Sam Lowe claims the first spot. Le Col’s Matt Cross crosses the line in 3rd.
Event 9: Elite 15Km Points Race
A true 6-day style event with World Class contenders saw a gritting race for points every tenth lap of the 60 on offer. It was fitting that Argentinean’s Songster Sebastian Donadio collected the most points for Manchester City Council. Feeling the effects of an earlier fall saw Team Sky’s Pete Kennaugh retire, along with Team Captain Geraint Thomas soon after. Ben Swift collected the 2nd most points whilst, Franco Mavulli of Le Col collected the 3rd most. With only one finisher for Team Sky it would mean dropping many points and ultimately 1st place position in the Championship League.
Event 10: DHL Future Girls Scratch Race

Event 17: The penultimate round brought us the 3 man Madison. Never seen before in the UK, this eight team battle was played out over 20Kms (80 laps). It was the team of Le Col’s Jon Mould, Andy Fenn & Franco Marvulli that collected the most points, Eleven in total. Chasing all the way, were Maxgear Racing’s winning combination of Simon & Adam Yates along with Guest Leif Lampater. They amassed Nine points. Team Sky started without Ben Swift. Both Pete Kennaugh & Geraint Thomas also retired, so no Championship points again. Revolution All-Stars Luke Rowe, Tom Moses & Guest Michael Morkov took 3rd position scoring Seven points in the race.
Event 18: DHL Future Boys Keirin
Finishing the night off with another Sprinters race saw Maxgear Racing’s Matt Rotherham take the win. Revolution All-stars Ryan Whatmough was 2nd & Team Sky’s Alex Minting 3rd.

Revolution 29 Round 1, 23 Oct 2010
Author: Chris Maher, Pictures courtesy of: Chris Maher | Photography
Manchester’s National Track Cycle Centre once again hosted Face Partnerships, Cycling Revolution. Another packed house awaited in anticipation for the return of the Big Yin, Sir Chris Hoy. And without disappointment he was back performing at his best, after a poor British National Track Championships mainly due to illness. Team Sky’s Chris Hoy, once again, thrilled the Public in the opening qualifying session of the Revolution Sprint. Leaving behind the likes of Crampton & Edgar, Chris also managed to see off the current British Sprint Champion, Jason Kenny. Also mixing it with the best, with a respectable time of 10.263 was the North East’s David Daniell. The 20 year old from Middlesbrough showed that he has the potential to one day become, the force that is, Sir Chris Hoy.
Result
- Chris Hoy - Team Sky - 10.065
- David Daniell - Motorpoint-Marshalls Pasta - 10.263
- Matt Crampton - Revolution All-stars - 10.363
- Jason Kenny - Maxgear Racing - 10.480
- Chris Pritchard - Le Col - 10.488
- Ross Edgar - Rapha Condor Sharp - 10.516
- Pete Mitchell - Manchester City Council - 10.552
- Kian Emadi - CHEP UK - 10.869
This then set up the competition format for the Revolution Championship Sprint. First Vs Last, Second Vs 2nd Last ect…
Event 2 was the Motor Paced 6Km Scratch Race. One for the Endurance riders, This Special Race was one final chance for multi Olympic Champion & World Champion, Chris Newton, to take to the boards. Taking part in this formal last Track Race, Chris who recently won the British Premier Calendar Road Race Championship, ended his career on a high. Having participated in every Revolution barring one, it was a last chance to see him ride around the Worlds best Velodrome here in Manchester. As the race progressed, and the Moped left the track with 6 laps remaining, it was the Motorpoint Marshalls Pasta boys & Rapha Condor Sharp boys that shaped the Race. As the Race intensified it was Chris Newton that took the honours, to a standing ovation from the crowd and he circled several times accepting the applause of an appreciative audience.
Result
- Chris Newton - Rapha Condor Sharp (Not official)
- Steven Burke - Motorpoint Marshalls Pasta
- Luke Rowe - Revolution All-stars
- Robert Crampton - Maxgear Racing
Event 3 gave a chance for the up & coming youngsters to ride in such a large event. The DHL Future Stars (Boys) 5Km Point Race was won by Le Col’s Matt Cross. 2nd was CHEP UK’s Harry Tanfield & 3rd was Le Col’s Zachary May.
Returning to the main theme for the evening, the Revolution Sprint, Event 4, got underway. Hoy easily out sprinted Emadi. Next we saw Daniell beating Mitchell, Crampton beating Edgar & then Kenny beating Pritchard for the Semi Finals.
Event 5 gave the girls a chance to shine. The DHL Future Stars (Girls) 5Km Scratch Race. Maxgear Racing’s Jess Crampton takes the victory in front of Team Sky’s Lucy Garner & Revolution All-stars Rebecca Hunt. The Race slowed down slightly through the middle part when Manchester City Council’s Stephanie Higgs fell awkwardly into the apron & had to be assisted off the track.
Event 6 is a Revolution speciality. The mixing of the very popular Madison scenario, with a timed event, the Revolution Madison Kilo Time Trial fuses high pace action with an interactive pairing of riders. The fastest time recorded since the beginning of the Revolution in 2003, belongs to Sir Chris Hoy & Arnaud Tournant. Set in Revolution 20, these two World Class Sprinters set a time of 54.549. In the first of 2 heats, CHEP UK’s Dan Mclay & Alex Dowsett set the quickest time of the evening of 58.016. The conclusion of the Event Round 12 then saw the regular pairing of Motorpoint Marshalls Pasta’s Ed Clancy & Steven Burke to win the competition in a time of 56.316.
Back to the Championship Sprint for Event 7 saw Chris Hoy beating Jason Kenny in 10.544 & David Daniell beating Matt Crampton in 10.672.
Event 8 was the DHL Future Stars (Boys) 6 Lap Dash. Maxgear Racings Matt Rotherham takes the win followed by Revolution All-stars James Berryman & CHEP UK’s Harry Enfield.
Event 9 brought the Men’s 15Km Point Race. Leading the field early on Mould, Clancy & Tennant paced the race. Clancy never to far away from the front saw the likes of Dowsett & Irvine try their hand at lapping the field. In the end it was Motorpoint Marshalls Pasta’s Ed Clancy that gained the upper hand to steal the glory.
Result
- Ed Clancy - Motorpoint Marshalls pasta
- Luke Rowe - Revolution All-stars
- Alex Dowsett - CHEP UK
The Championship Revolution Sprint returned for the loses 6 Lap Dash & Revolution All-stars Matt Crampton took the win.
Event 11 saw the return of the girls for the DHL Future Stars 5km Points Race. 2009 Championship Winner Emily Kay riding for Motorpoint Marshalls Pasta this time round returned to win the event with Maxgear Racing’s Hannah Layland 2nd, then Rapha Condor Sharp’s Amy Jacobs 3rd.
Next we saw the return of the Revolution Championship Sprint Final, Hoy Vs Daniell. There was only going to be one outcome, but a young David Daniell fought all the way to the line, it was no match for the northerner as Hoy sailed over the line in style.
We had one last outing for the boys next in Event 14, the DHL Future Stars Scratch Race. 5Kms or 20 laps of the Velodrome boards saw Team Sky’s Sam Lowe take the victory. Maxgear Racings Chris Latham took 2nd & Team Sky’s Alex Minting came in 3rd.
All the Sprinters were back on the track for Event 15, the Keirin. 5 laps behind the Motor Paced Moped follow by 3 action packed laps all the way to the line. Normally a watch and wait event say Jason Kenny go for a long one. As the rest of the field dithered the finish line quickly got closer for Kenny, but not wanting to him get the victory easily it was Team Sky’s Chris Hoy that cranked up the charge in an explosive fashion to bridge an unbelievable gap & steal to show. The crowd once again stood to the applause of Britain’s Cycling Showman Sir Chris Hoy.
One last race for the girls. Event 16, The DHL Future Stars 6 Lap Dash. Showing she hadn’t lost the form that gave her the 2009 Championship. Motorpoint Marshalls Pasta’s Emily Kay took the win. Le Col’s girls Amy Hill & Amy Roberts took 2nd & 3rd.
To round off the competition in the Revolution Championship, Event 17 was the 10Km Scratch Race. Proving to be the man of the night, Motorpoint Marshalls Pasta’s Ed Clancy rode to victory in another Endurance event. Clancy along with Dowsett, Rowe & Irvine all contributed to pace as it unfolded, But Clancy who won the British Road Criterium Championship earlier in the Season has continued his form into the early Track Season.
Result
- Ed Clancy - Motorpoint Marshalls Pasta
- Luke Rowe - Revolution All-stars
- Martin Irvine - Revolution All-stars
The last race of the night, not part of the Revolution Championship was the Team Sprint. Old rivals England Vs Scotland gave the public one last chance to witness the power of the Sprinter. It was Kenny, Daniell & Crampton for England & Hoy, Edgar & Pritchard for Scotland. This 3-2-1 style race went down to the wire with England winning by a whisker. 45.500s against 45.842.

When announced at Revolution 33, that Mark Cavendish was guest riding the next event, ticket sales went through the roof and sold out in no time at all. Riding alongside ‘Cav’ will be future team-mates Geraint Thomas, Alex Dowsett & Peter Kennaugh from Sky Pro Cycling. Other top cyclists include Steven Burke & former Paris Roubaix winner Magnus Backstedt, Team UK Youth. Ed Clancy & Andrew Tennant from Rapha Condor Sharp, and Continental 6 Day Stars Franco Marvulli & Iljo Keisse. With so many strong athletes contesting the race wins, Cav will have to find his track legs very quickly.

A phenomenal ride in the Revolution Madison Kilo Time Trial by Rudy Project's 61 - Robert Bengsch & 62 - Marcel Kalz blew the usual protagonists away with this sub 55 second effort. That ride was just shy of the all time champion pairing of Sir Chris Hoy & Arnaud Tournant who set a time of 54.549 in Revolution 20.
The next round of Revolution will be race 40 in Glasgow, on 02nd February 2013, with highlights on Thursday 07th on ITV4 at 20.00pm.
